Hildring House – Guest Post by Debra

Debra says that she’s tired of all the demo pictures, so she’ll be commandeering this post to show “some pretty stuff.” Okay – I’ll relinquish the keyboard for a while. But before I do, and in the spirit of “pretty stuff,” here is a pic from our recent visit to the National Botanic Gardens in Washington D.C.:

So – on to Debra’s guest post:

Hildring House – More Demo and a Little Progress

Sometimes, “natural demolition” – usually gradual neglect and disuse – leaves a beautiful structure. Take, for instance, this abandoned church in Howth, Ireland:

The demo at Hildring House is not so elegant. Nor, however, is it intended to be. Things are moving right along, though. Let’s take a look.  Continue reading “Hildring House – More Demo and a Little Progress”

Hildring House – It's Demo Time!

It’s time for things to get messy – not dirty and decrepit like the street scene from Montevideo, Uruguay, below,

but sawdust flying and sheet rock dust hanging heavy in the air as the old gets torn out to make way for the new.  Continue reading “Hildring House – It's Demo Time!”

Hildring House – Changes Before Changes

Happy New Year!

Some things just have to change, even before the real work starts. Remember the two shades of red with black trim on the front door and entryway?

Debra said that had to go immediately. Eventually, we’ll paint the entire exterior of the house. But for now, even this small change makes a big difference: Continue reading “Hildring House – Changes Before Changes”

Hildring House -A Major New Project

We closed on a new property yesterday. We’re calling it Hildring House. It is a 1960 modern-ranch-style home. I guess you could call it Radern. Or Monch. For now, we’ll stick with Hildring House. This will be a short post, just to introduce it and give a little feel for the massive amount of work that has to be done to bring it up to Debra’s standards. The potential definitely is there, however, and we’re looking forward to diving in. This first pic is ill-defined, to illustrate that it’s in a kind of amorphous design state.

Let’s bring it into sharper focus: Continue reading “Hildring House -A Major New Project”

Nautical to Nice – a New Rental Property Project

Wow – seems like forever since I’ve blogged about Chrysalis Casa stuff. We’ve taken a couple of months break, traveling some and thinking about our next project. The 1985 movie “The Goonies” was filmed around Cannon Beach, Oregon. This pic is of Haystack Rock, it’s most iconic natural feature:

The only relevance to this post is that it’s on the Pacific coast, which brings to mind things nautical which, in turn, reminds me of a rental property that we’re in the process of rehabbing. You’ll see why in a minute. Here is a shot of the exterior:
