Heart of the SoMoToHo – The Kitchen – Part 7 of Many – Light and Water

2014-03-07 13.28.24While having light and running water in the SoMoToHo remodeled kitchen isn’t nearly as impressive as this display from the Magic Fountain of Montjuic in Barcelona, it’s a pretty important step in the process. It started with the installation of the countertops. IMG_2834 Here’s a shot of the top to the left of the sink. As you can see, Debra chose a marble slab with a good bit of movement in it which, contrasted with the White Christmas of the cabinets, really ratchets up the richness. Here is a shot of the area where the stove will go:IMG_2833As I think I’ve mentioned, there will be a surprise on the wall above this area that we’re particularly excited about. For now, however, the marble is enough to bring smiles. And here is the sink:IMG_2831White, single bowl (I am not a fan of divided bowl sinks in a kitchen), simple and spacious. If you’ve been following for awhile, you may remember that we did a stainless farm sink in the Mid Century Ranch. It was nice, but it didn’t match Debra’s vision for this kitchen. Personally, after spending the last couple of months washing dishes in thisIMG_2845

I was ready for pretty much anything with some room. Our contractor, the fabulous Shawn Cowdin, talked the plumber into coming in specially just to connect the sink. Here is a shot after that was done and the electrician installed the sconces. Notice the drainer full of clean dishes? We may not yet have a floor or any appliances but, by golly, we don’t have to wash dishes in a bar sink any more!IMG_2841 You might notice that the faucet and the sconces are antique, brushed brass. Mixed metals is a thing right now, and Debra decided to go that direction in this kitchen. I like it. I also think that, as long as we stay away from shiny finishes (which we are) we won’t run any risk of a quickly dated design.

One problem that surfaced after the countertops were installed was the fact that the electrical outlet boxes were not located so as to coordinate with the backsplash tile – they would have split seams, etc., so they had to be adjusted. IMG_2840IMG_2839

There isn’t any reason to tape and bed the sheet rock joints made by the adjustments since the tile will cover them.

Soon afterward, and continuing the mixed metal theme, Justin installed the satin nickel cabinet hardware. The pantry cabinet to the left of the stove mimics exactly what the fridge will look like with its panels installed. IMG_2842The flooring is next, to be followed pretty quickly by the tile, appliances, and finishing touches. Not long now!IMG_2844We appreciate you reading and hope that you’ll stick with us – and tell your friends!
